ἝΔος, τό, meist poetisch, vgl. ἕδρα, 1) der Sitz; a) der Sessel, auf dem man sitzt, Il. 1, 534. 581. 9, 194. – b) das Sitzen, οὐχ ἕδος ἐστί, es ist nicht Zeit, müssig dazusitzen, Il. 11, 648. 23, 205. – c) Wohnsitz, bes. der Götter; Ὄλυμπος ϑεῶν ἕδος Hes. Sc. 203; Od. 6, 42 u. öfter; ἕδος Οὐλύμποιο Il. 24, 144; Pind. N. 6, 3 Ol. 2, 13. Auch ἕδος Θήβης, die Stadt selbst, Il. 4, 406; Ἰϑάκης ἕδος Od. 13, 344; Μάκαρος ἕδος Il. 24, 544, wo Makar wohnte; Θεράπνας ὑψίπεδον ἕ. Pind. I. 1, 31; Αἰακιδᾶν εὔπυργον N. 4, 12; ὅσοι Ἀσίας ἕδος νέμονται Aesch. Prom. 411, vgl. Pers. 890; Eur. I. A. 1597 u. a. D. – Bes. heißen die Tempel der Götter δαιμόνων ἕδη, Soph. O. R. 886, vgl. El. 1366; so auch in Prosa, ϑεῶν ἕδη Plat. Phaed. 111 b; Isocr. 3, 9. 4, 155, wo es nach Thom. Mag. auch auf die Götterbilder selbst geht, wie Lycurg. 1 τῶν ϑεῶν νεὼς καὶ τὰ ἕδη verbunden ist; Isocr. 15, 2 Φειδίας τὸ τῆς Ἀϑηνᾶς ἕδος ἐργασάμενος, wie auch Xen. Hell. 1, 4, 12 τοῦ ἕδους τῆς Ἀϑηνᾶς κατακεκαλυμμένου zu verstehen u. B. A. p. 246 ἕδος τὸ ἄγαλμα erkl. wird. Vgl. noch Dion. Hal. 1, 47. 3, 69; Plut.
